Strengthening Community Capacity to Quit Smoking

A community smoking cessation project helping residents understand the benefits of quitting and encouraging people to access local stop smoking support. Team members became smokefree champions, sharing information and connecting people with appropriate support services.

Period

2024–2025

Funder

London Borough of Newham Public Health

What

What we delivered

A peer-led smoking cessation programme that trained community members as smokefree champions and connected residents to NHS stop-smoking services.

Why

Why this work mattered

Smoking remains a leading driver of preventable death in Newham. Trusted, peer-to-peer support reaches people who would not approach formal services on their own.

How

How we delivered it

  1. 01

Recruited and trained smokefree champions from within the church and wider community.

  2. 02

Held community conversations focused on quitting and harm reduction.

  3. 03

Built a referral pathway directly into Newham's stop-smoking service.

Impact

Champions continued to support quit attempts beyond the funded period, and Newham Public Health awarded follow-on funding for 2026.
