Cancer Screening and Early Detection Outreach

RCCG New Wine Assembly delivered a community cancer screening and early detection outreach project. The project focused on raising awareness of breast, cervical and bowel cancer screening, particularly among African and Black minority communities who may face barriers such as fear, stigma, misinformation or lack of awareness. Through a community workshop held in December 2024, expert health information, survivor testimony, drama, printed materials and online engagement, we helped people feel more confident to talk about cancer, recognise the importance of early detection and consider taking up screening opportunities.

Cancer Awareness Workshop — "Preventable or Curable? Let's Ask the Experts"

A follow-on cancer awareness project continuing our focus on improving awareness of cancer signs, symptoms and screening within Black African and Caribbean communities in East London. The programme included expert talks, survivor testimony, community discussion, drama, storytelling, online engagement and awareness materials covering breast, cervical, bowel and prostate cancer.

Strengthening Community Capacity to Quit Smoking

A community smoking cessation project helping residents understand the benefits of quitting and encouraging people to access local stop smoking support. Team members became smokefree champions, sharing information and connecting people with appropriate support services.

Strengthening Community Capacity to Quit Smoking (Follow-on)

A follow-on smoking cessation project building on trusted relationships from previous work. Includes community conversations, awareness activities, signposting, referrals and continued development of smokefree champions.

Living Well with COVID-19 — Young People's Health & Wellbeing

A young people's health and wellbeing project using workshops, sports, outdoor activities, drama, social media and community conversations to support young people's health, mental wellbeing and confidence as they adjusted to life after the peak of the pandemic.

Sound Mind — Young People's Mental Health and Wellbeing

Between August 2022 and February 2023, RCCG New Wine Assembly delivered Sound Mind, a young people's mental health and wellbeing project in Newham. The project used football, drama, workshops, talent events, music, counselling support and signposting to help young people build resilience, reduce isolation and talk more openly about mental health.

Open to people of all faiths, no faith and all backgrounds.

Active Together Initiative

A community sport and physical activity project for people from culturally diverse communities who were not regularly active. Encouraged local residents to take part in accessible, enjoyable community-based physical activities promoting healthier lifestyles, confidence and social connection.

Active Together Plus

A follow-on project providing community-based physical activities including dance, table tennis, football, handball and street fitness, with a focus on supporting Black and African communities in London to become more active.

New Wine Training and Supports

A holistic support project for vulnerable people in Newham during the COVID-19 crisis, providing training, volunteer support, practical guidance and community-based assistance to help people remain connected, supported and encouraged.
